Tri-Meet Thriller (Blog 2)

On a fast-paced, high-energy night in the O’Dome, UF Gymnastics came out on top of not one, but two teams.

The tri-meet saw #2 Florida host #4 Denver and #18 Iowa State. The exciting match-up featured constant action, as all three teams competed simultaneously. It was the first time the Gators had hosted a tri-meet since 2012.

The Gators finished in first place with a score of 197.875 and are still undefeated on the season. They also scored their second highest total of the season, behind their record-breaking performance against LSU two weeks ago.

This was thanks in part to Trinity Thomas’ perfect ten. The sophomore earned her second perfect score, and first perfect score on bars.

Trinity was not the only gymnast to receive a perfect 10, however. Denver’s Maddie Karr also earned a 10 for her vault.

A few Gators came close to a 10. Alyssa Baumann scored a 9.975 on floor, as did Trinity. Savannah Schoenherr scored a 9.95 on bars, and Payton Richards earned a 9.95 on the beam.

To add to the excitement, Jazmyn Foberg made her vault debut for the season. The junior was out all of last season due to an injury. She has been working very hard to return to competition form. It all paid off last night when she opened on vault and earned a 9.825. It was nice to see Jazzy back in the lineup, and hopefully it will become more of a constant.

Despite all of the thrills, there still was some energy missing from the O’Dome as Nya Reed sat out her second consecutive competition. The sophomore, who is a must-see on vault and floor, is still regaining her strength after being ill. It was encouraging, though, to see that Nya was feeling well enough to be with the team and cheer on her teammates.

Next week, the Gators head to Auburn to take on the Tigers. They will return to the O’Dome in two weeks for the annual Link to Pink meet, where they will face Alabama.

  1. Carly,
This meet was definitely impressive to watch. I am lucky enough to assist with home meet operations for the Gators and this meet was very unique. This is one of the most exciting teams to watch this season and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish.
