Finally, some good news for Gators and their fans!
While the 2020 gymnastics season did not end the way anyone hoped, it is over regardless. The Gators gymnasts were unable to reach their team goal of winning a national championship, but some individual Gators were recently recognized.
Trinity Thomas had perhaps one of the best seasons in all of college gymnastics. She scored four perfect 10s on three different events, helping the Gators hold steady at #2 in the rankings throughout the season. The accolades continued with five All-American honors, which is the maximum amount one can receive. The only other Gator gymnast to ever accomplish this was Brigdet Sloan. Trinity was recognized as first-team All American on the beam, floor, bars, and all-around. She placed second-team for vault.
Fellow sophomore Savannah Schoenherr also received All-American honors, the first of her career. She made the second team for the uneven bars. This came after a season where she almost scored a perfect 10, won the uneven bar title at the tri-meet against Denver and Iowa State, scored a 9.90 or better five times, and scored a 9.95 or better three times.
Junior Alyssa Baumann also earned All-American honors, two times over. This puts her at four for her career. She was first-team on floor and second-team on beam. Both came as no surprise, as she scored a 9.925 or higher on floor six times, as well as setting a career high of 9.975. In addition, she earned seven straight scores of 9.90 or above on the beam.
Last but certainly not least, senior Rachel Gowey also earned an All-American honor. She was first-team on balance beam, her second time being honored for the event. This also came as no surprise as Rachel scored a perfect 10 on the beam during this season, as well as a 9.90 or better eight times.
Carly,
Gymnastics is not a sport that I usually follow very closely, so I have really enjoyed your blog and getting to know a little more about the sport and the Gators’ team. I’m sure this has been tough on all college athletes, but it great to see that these Gators gymnasts are still being recognized for the success not only this year, but over the past few years of their careers. I’m sure this senior class will be remembered for a long time for all sports simply due to the fact that they never got a chance to compete that one last time.
